Even when we exercise routinely and eat healthy there are sometimes deposits of fat that just do not seem to reduce. That is when Dr. Paul Vitenas recommends you consider liposuction.
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, is the surgical removal of localized or regional excess fatty tissue. Dr. Vitenas indicates that liposuction is commonly used to target fat deposits of the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, chest, breast, knees, chin, neck and upper arms. Liposuction can be performed alone or in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as a breast reduction or tummy tuck. The best candidates for liposuction are adults of any age within 30% of their ideal body weight with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. This is not a treatment for obesity and is not a substitute for proper diet and exercise.
Liposuction is performed in a fully accredited hospital or surgical facility under general anesthesia at Houston Surgery Center, with an overnight stay for the patient’s comfort if needed. Through small incisions that are hidden in inconspicuous areas Dr. Paul Vitenas injects fluid that hardens the fat cells. Then through a thin cannula the excess fat which is then removed using a surgical vacuum. Dr. Vitenas refers to this technique as “super wet.” Although this generally takes 1 to 2 hours to perform, the amount of time needed for the procedure will vary due to the amount of fat being removed and the size of the area being treated.
After surgery initial healing will include swelling, numbness, soreness and bruising. Prescribed oral medication helps control any discomfort. A compression garment is worn to control swelling and to compress the skin to the new body contours. Dr. Vitenas encourages his patients to walk as soon as possible to help prevent blood clots in the legs. Most of the swelling resolves within 3 weeks although some swelling and skin laxity can persist for up to 6 months. The recovery time varies for each patient but most patients can return to work within a few days after surgery. Strenuous activity should be avoided for up to 1 month.
